Which Game Caused This Little Kid To Jack A Car?

by Harold Goldberg | 30. July 2009 12:22 | permalink

So I've got MSNBC on in the background and there's this hilarious video of a seven year old kid from Utah jacking a car. I mean, look at the little bastard run from the cop (at the end of the video)!

Klint Anderson, the buttoned up Utah cop interviewed by phone on TV, said that the boy was influenced by a video game in which you drive away from police. Now I assume the kid wasn't playing GTA. Think it might've been the Need For Speed series? Goes to show you, those 'T' ratings mean 'teen,' kid.

Then again, he drives pretty good, don't you think?

UPDATE: Just saw via Today online that the kid is now banned from playing video games.

    Well, he can steer and avoid crashing ok, which isnt so advanced (kids have bikes dont they?) but i'd say he's having trouble reaching the pedals - the car braked fairly gently throughout and at the end, and at no point did even the chasing patrol car get up to 60mph (there's a speed readout in the top left), mostly staying around 35 which can't represent a particularly hard touch on the gas for a moderately sporty car like that - he might even be using cruise for a lot of it (playstation-like fingertip speed control!). I could easily have kept up with that chase on my commuter bike which gets regularly spanked away from stops by light trucks.

    Games have clouded the innocent minds of our children! Let's tie them up and throw them in a lake to see if they float!

    i believe there was some talk also about the kid previously driving the family tractor around their home's grounds.

    i don't understand how this jacking could happen, living in manhattan as i do where not everyone has cars. david and john are right, though: it's most likely a parenting problem, not a 'bad seed'.

    @DavidThomas:

    Didn't you get the memo? All failures in parenting should be ignored and all anger should be directed solely at the game industry.

    That's what parenting is right? ignoring the problem and passing the blame? Great life lessons this kid must have learned from his parents.

    Ya know, I have a seven year old. I cannot even fathom him pulling a stunt like this. Then again, I don't live in a rural area where everyone has recently been evacuated.

    Maybe the kid was just bored.

    But seriously, a few things seem odd to me as a parent:

    1. How did he get the keys?
    2. How did he learn to drive so well? (Don't tell me videogames. A. There are no pedals in Need for Speed. B. He's a short kid. He must have had to drive basically standing on the gas. That is, I think this kid was driving with dad before he got behind the wheel alone).
    3. Where were his parents?

    Someone isn't relating all the facts. What we have here looks like test footage from Talidagea Nights II.

    @CG-Prophet:

    I would rather beat the parents, for not knowing how to parent.

    @Palalong:

    People get upset when you say "i'd beat my kid" but I agree. That clip was insane.

    LMFAO, I'd slap the shit out of my kid if he did that. Of course, I don't think I would be as inept at parenting as whoever that little brats parent are

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
