Jones Vows To Play/Finish Final Fantasy XII

by Scott Jones | 9. October 2009 10:55 | permalink

Yesterday I went to the local EB Games here in Vancouver to buy a copy of Final Fantasy XII.

In related news, pigs were seen flying over several North American cities yesterday.

When I was at the store, I saw these two games prominently displayed in the PS2 section:

That's right: Trapt and Zathura. They sound like titles of games that someone who knows nothing about games would make up.

I can imagine my mother saying, "What are you doing in there for hours on end? Playing Zathura again or whatever the hell it's called? Why don't you go out and get a job? Why don't you have more friends? Why can't you be more like your brother!!!!!"

Ahem.

Sorry for that.

Anyway, back to Final Fantasy XII.

When John Teti and I were in Tokyo a few weeks back, the top floor of the Shinjuku Prince Hotel featured a very fine establishment called FUGA.

We would retire there in the evenings and drink extremely weak gin and tonics and hold forth on various subjects like politics, religion, sex, the "greening" of the tech industry, and Final Fantasy.

Teti and I are friends, despite our age difference. He's the oldest young man I know.

Anyway, one boozey night, in the name of cementing our friendship, after about 900,004 weak gin and tonics at FUGA, I pledged to him that I would finish ONE Final Fantasy game before I die.

He said, "Fine, and that Final Fantasy will be Final Fantasy XII."

First impressions of the box: The box cover has all kinds of blonde people on it, trying to look like toughs, and things that look like airships. Airships! I don't see any chocobos on there, so that's good... The back of the box says DISCOVER THE SECRET THAT WILL UNRAVEL AN EMPIRE.

That does sound like fun...

Anyway, I'm a man of my word.

Check back here for my Final Fantasy XII updates as they happen.

    @buttongwinnett:

    FFX is pretty straight forward but you either like the story or you don't. Also, there is an entire level of casting magic and moving boxes around to solve a puzzle. I think I read somewhere around here that Scott was finished with that mechanic.

    Mr. Jones,
    if you haveto play a Final Fantasy, XII is probably your best bet, though you really should have just picked up one of the PSP or DS remakes...

    @johnteti:

    I did eventually get through it but if left a bad taste in my mouth so I moved on soon after. When you grow up in awe of Square-Etc seeing the crappy parts they throw at us through the eyes of an adult is an eye opening, faith shattering experience. I had to go back and reevaulate my entire gaming life.

    It was a rough couple of minutes.

    I picked Final Fantasy XII because while Final Fantasy VI is my favorite, FF12 is a very close second (maybe even a TIE!!!!! WOW!!!), and I thought it would be more palatable to Jones. I have to disagree with piccolo13 and say that I appreciated the more subtle touch they used with the cast this time. All of them felt human -- even the crazy cat/bunny woman -- and the central conflict was not dripping with the angsty angst that mars most of these games. I have not enjoyed a Final Fantasy story this much since FF8.

    I also thought the "gambit" system was a freaking brilliant of RPG combat, and perfect for someone like Jones who is unlikely to put up with the grind of random battles.

    @Windstorm: Ha! I liked that part, but I remember playing it through the first time and thinking, "I bet a lot of people are going to hate this." Honestly though, dude, sack up. It doesn't take that long.

    Way to think ahead by saying "Play/Finish".

    10-1 odds you give up when you have to solve people's problems and collect leeks or whatever those things inbetween me and the last part of the game were called.

    Just send me the money. Good luck but just hand it on over.

The Games That Time Forgot

The games we're pulling together in this feature won't appear on any of those best-of lists and get confused looks when you mention them in conversation. Just because time has forgotten these titles, though, doesn't mean you should forget them, too.
